Our Projects

The Santa Maria Courtyard Renewal project will transform the outdoor courtyard at Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home into a welcoming green space for residents, families, and the wider community. Following sewer repairs that required excavation of the courtyard, the space will be revitalized with native trees, shrubs, flowering perennials, and a central lawn to create a peaceful, accessible environment.Designed with accessibility in mind, the courtyard will feature wheelchair-friendly pathways, shaded seating areas, and low-maintenance landscaping that encourages outdoor recreation, social gatherings, and intergenerational programming. The renewed space will help reduce isolation by providing residents with a beautiful setting to connect with family, volunteers, students, and community groups while enjoying the many benefits of nature.

After spending the past two years fundraising for a new playground, the Arborfield Child Care Society took the next step in creating a greener, more welcoming space for the community. The project enhanced the town-owned property beside the school with colourful flowers near the sign and buddy benches, new shrubs around the school and playground, and additional trees along the perimeter. As part of the Society's before- and after-school programming, children helped plant and care for the new greenery while learning about the many benefits of healthy, vibrant green spaces.Together, these improvements have created an inviting outdoor space where families can gather, play, connect with nature, and build a stronger sense of community.

Memorial School in Hamilton's east end transformed its once-neglected front green space into a welcoming, low-maintenance garden and community gathering area. 🌿The site was cleared of weeds and revitalized with native and pollinator-friendly plants, while armour stone seating and defined walking paths created an inviting space for learning, relaxation, and connection. Students, parents, and neighbours came together to help plant and care for the garden, fostering a shared sense of ownership and community pride.The revitalized space now supports local biodiversity, helps reduce stormwater runoff, and provides a safe, accessible outdoor environment where the school community and surrounding Ward 3 neighbourhood can gather and enjoy nature for years to come.‍

This project transformed former downtown parking spaces into an inclusive urban green sanctuary with three interconnected zones: an Indigenous Medicine Wheel Garden featuring medicinal plants, a multicultural biodiversity garden showcasing global food crops, and accessible raised garden beds designed for seniors and wheelchair users. Replacing heat-absorbing asphalt with trees, shrubs, edible plantings, and permeable surfaces helped reduce urban heat island effects while creating a welcoming gathering space that supports biodiversity, celebrates Indigenous knowledge, promotes cultural exchange and food sovereignty, and strengthens community well-being.

The new Community Peace Garden in Mapleton Park is a beautiful example of what can be achieved when a community comes together. Designed to foster dialogue, education, and reflection, the garden features native plantings, accessible pathways, a turtle circle, public art, and a Peace Pole that honours Indigenous traditions and celebrates Greater Moncton's designation as an International City of Peace.Through our #GreenMyCity grant program, Green Cities Foundation was proud to support this inspiring initiative. A heartfelt thank you to the Community Peace Garden Development Committee for leading the project, along with the City of Moncton / Ville de Moncton, the Province of New Brunswick / Nouveau-Brunswick, Trees for Life, Viridis Design Studio Ltd., EXP, NBCC Saint John staff and students, artist Kerry O'Toole, Teri Ficyk of Terificyk Designs, Landscape New Brunswick-PEI, local Indigenous communities, community organizations, businesses, volunteers, donors, and everyone who contributed their time, expertise, and passion to bring this vision to life.

Students at JS McCormick School came together to help transform their outdoor space into a greener, more inclusive place for not only the children at the school, but for everyone in the community.Supported through our #GreenMyCity program, Lacombe Public Schools Enhancement Society is leading the revitalization of an aging schoolyard with new trees, native grasses, and a beautiful Medicine Wheel garden. Together, these additions are creating an outdoor space where children can play, explore, learn, and connect with nature.Students, volunteers, and community partners rolled up their sleeves to plant greenery that will continue to grow alongside future generations of young learners. Schools are often at the heart of a community, and projects like this bring people together in meaningful ways.
