DISCOVER THE IMPACT OF YOUR GREENSPACE

Every Plant Makes a Difference.

Find out how much one new landscaped space can make a difference with our Clean Air Calculator. This interactive tool lets you map green spaces—lawns, trees, shrubs, gardens—and instantly see their measurable impact on the environment.

Measure the Power of Nature — One Garden at a Time

Discover Your Impact.

The Clean Air Calculator reveals the tangible environmental benefits of green spaces by estimating how much carbon dioxide is sequestered, how much oxygen is produced, and how many people benefit from cleaner air—right in your own community.

Quantify the Benefits of Trees, Lawns, and Gardens

About the Calculator.

Developed through the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association’s Climate Adaptation Committee, this tool uses ArcGIS mapping software to visualize the environmental value of urban greenery.

The underlying science draws from government and academic research, including the U.S. Forest Service, University of Guelph, and Natural Resources Canada. It’s designed for everyone—from students to city planners—to understand, in clear and simple terms, how green spaces make cities more livable.

Metrics
Explained.

The calculator estimates clean air volume based on the oxygen produced by plants each year. Clean air refers to air with no harmful levels of pollutants or chemicals—essential for human and environmental health.

Carbon
Dioxide
Plants absorb carbon dioxide (CO₂) and store carbon in their roots, stems, and soil. The calculator expresses this in megagrams (Mg) of CO₂ equivalent—an international standard for measuring greenhouse gas reduction.
Clean
Air
Through photosynthesis, plants release oxygen into the atmosphere. This output is measured in cubic metres (m³) per year using molecular weight ratios from peer-reviewed studies.
People
Impacted
Each person consumes about 215 m³ of oxygen per year. This metric estimates how many individuals benefit from the oxygen produced by your selected area.
Km offset
per year
Burning one litre of gasoline produces roughly 2.3 kg of CO₂.By comparing vegetation’s CO₂ absorption to average vehicle emissions, the calculator shows how many vehicle kilometres are offset annually.
